UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation

The purpose of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environment Preservation is to afford recognition to outstanding contributions by individuals, groups of individuals, institutes or organizations in the management or preservation of the environment, consistent with the policies, aims and objectives of UNESCO, and in relation to the Organization’s programmes in this field, i.e. environmental and natural resources research, environmental education and training, creation of environmental awareness through the preparation of environmental information materials and activities aimed at establishing and managing protected areas such as biosphere reserves and natural World Heritage sites.

The Prize is awarded every two years. As of 2013, the financial Prize reward is USD 70,000, a donation graciously made by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman.

Please note that the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2013 Prize is 10 September 2013.

The Prize will be awarded for the 12th time at a ceremony that will take place during the World Science Forum in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), from 24 to 27 November 2013.

The monitoring and evaluation process for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) is designed to capture a variety of activities related to ESD and take stock of the growth of ESD throughout the DESD. The final assessment and report will summarize and highlight the accomplishments of the DESD, convey lessons learnt and point the way for post-Decade efforts.

In order to help UNESCO prepare the final DESD report, please provide UNESCO with your inputs by answering before 31 October 2013 the online questionnaire.

Re-Visiting The Indigenous Past Of Northeast India

With the advent of modern science, the recent decades has seen urban influence penetrating even the lives of those who remain far away from cities. The same applies here in Northeast India. The indigenous peoples of the region, who occupy a remote frontiers consisting of rainforests and Himalayan mountains, have been witnessing the advent of roads and urban goods into their territory which only twenty years back appeared forbidden to the outside world. The cultures and customs which once was have already changed to some extent. And as years pass, more of it will disappear as younger people begin to choose alternative modern lifestyles over traditional. On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2013, we would like to walk down memory lane through the means of vintage photographs and revisit the lifestyles of our region’s people to a time which once was but will never again be.
